Roylene Rides at the Door, State Conservationist, awards Maxine Mendez and Alexis Colvin, Business Management Leadership trainees, for their hard work and dedication to NRCS in the summer of 2. It's been a wild and crazy summer in Human Resources (HR). Besides the normal workload (and don't get me started on that!) we've also been host to two Business Management Leadership Program (BMLP) trainees.

Now, I must admit, when I heard we were hosting not one but two trainees I was a bit concerned. With two new permanent staff still in training mode I was worried we wouldn't be able to spare the time and effort needed to provide the quality training experience the BMLP trainees deserved. If you're not familiar with the BMLP, it's a two- year internship designed to train future administrative staff in the areas of Human Resources, Financial Management, Acquisitions, and Administrative Support functions. There were 9,0. 00 applications for this program (and it was only advertised one week!), and only 1. Trainees receive both formal training and on the job training, completing seven rotations throughout their two- year internship. At the end of the program they will be placed in a NRCS office somewhere in the country.
Washington State was lucky enough to host Alexis Colvin and Maxine Mendez. Alexis is from Tennessee and Maxine is from Texas. They drove cross country to do their 1. Human Resources rotation in Washington State, and their ability to handle logistics, make living arrangements, and adapt to a new state and new surroundings have been truly remarkable. As I said, I was worried that we wouldn't be able to do these two justice, and I was right.
It took a week or two to get organized, but what I found was that no matter how much the HR staff threw at Maxine and Alexis they kept coming back asking to learn more, more, more. Their thirst for knowledge, ability to absorb new and complex information, willingness to research and take on extra training on their own, and their drive to be the best HR specialists they can possibly be was absolutely amazing.
They not only mastered every lesson, task, and challenge we gave them, they came back and asked for more difficult work. To say they made the most of their opportunity to learn about HR in their allotted 1. Maxine and Alexis told me they feel lucky to have been placed in Washington State. They enjoyed the challenges, the scenery, and the people. But looking back I think we were the lucky ones. Working with Alexis and Maxine gave Kathy, Cathy, Rob, and me a chance to hone our own skills and get back in touch with the love of learning and love of HR we all share. I can't speak for the other HR staff, but I came away inspired and refreshed, and reminded of the reason I chose to do HR work in the first place.

That is an extraordinary gift, and one for which I am extremely grateful. I'm hoping that the staff in other offices gets to experience similar joys and enthusiasm when they have new people join their teams either temporarily or permanently. Alexis and Maxine left us in mid- September to return to Dallas where they will receive an orientation and training to prepare them for their next 1. Acquisitions. As we come to the end of this wild and crazy summer, I'm struck by one thought: if the other BMLP trainees are anything like Alexis and Maxine, the agency has a bright future ahead.
